Visit to Carolyn and Charles Shaw's garden

As part of the SAGE Garden Fortnight, Carolyn and Charles Shaw hosted a visit to their lovely garden in Houghton.   It was a warm and sunny day, so absolutely the  weather  to see gardens at their very best.

The garden has wonderful views out onto the fields towards Arundel and benefits from an arbour attached to the side of the house with a wisteria which was still in flower.

Apparently it was the best year for the wisteria yet;  it is a delicate type and the leaves and the flowers appear at about the same time which is, we thought, unusual.

The garden includes lots of roses, delphiniums and wonderful lavender which obviously loves it there;  it looks incredibly healthy.

Carolyn showed us an interesting small shrub which she thinks is South African and has a small blue bell shaped flower;  she did tell me the name but I have forgotten and could not find it via the internet.

You may recall Charles had been taking cuttings of oleader and there are several clumps of a red variety which will soon be out.

Charles was weeding in the vegetable patch during my visit and the vegetables were looking good with the exception of carrots which had apparently not germinated. I have actually had the same problem this year.

Carolyn and Charles had a steady stream of members over the course of the day and raised £51 for AMR.  Many thanks to Mike Beck for several of these photos.

Sandie's garden was open today and tomorrow it is the turn of Rhona, Sally and Janet.   Have a good day.

Best wishes

Rosemary
