On 1st September, we took ourselves off to meet my sister and her husband to have lunch at Stephen Harris's pub/restaurant over 2 hours away in Seasalter in Kent.
We decided to stay overnight and also to call in at Chilham Castle on the way. Originally built in 1616 by Sir Dudley Digges on the site of a medieval castle, the house (not open at present) is very handsome and occupies a beautiful position offering sweeping views of the surrounding area.
The gardens were originally designed by Capability Brown and are open to the public in the summer months.
The large topiary standing proud at the edge of the haha over looking the surrounding fields and vineyards were the most dramatic feature, together with the large echiums which can be seen here.
