Malthouse Farm visit with Kate Losty

I visited Malthouse Farm recently with Kate Losty when it opened for the NGS.   It is near Hassocks and so about an hour's drive from Amberley.    It is definitely a garden which I think other SAGE members would enjoy.

The garden (aren't they all) is split into rooms/areas and is over 5 acres in total.   Near the house there are traditional flowers beds with lots of colour (the roses were still out)  primarily from clumps of perennials

A large part of the garden is wild with a dramatic hedge of willow separating two areas including some willow structures.     The owners had planted some wild flower mixes that year but had recently enclosed what was left after an infestation of rabbits.  I had some sympathy.

Turning back you encounter a wild life pond and an area which is full of pots.

One of the pots which attracted my attention was filled with cuphea purple passion.  Both Kate and I came away with small cuttings and mine has survived so far.   It is apparently perennial, but it is also tender so I will bring it under cover and see if it overwinters.

The owner of Pelham Plants (another place which would be a good SAGE visit) had set up a stall in the pots area.  in the absence of tea and cake, a plant stall is a good alternative.

Kind regards

Rosemary
