Linda's Garden - A Couple of Star Performers

These are Amaryllis belladonna, a bulb that loves to be baked all summer and then after the first autumn rains they produced red spears that shoot out of the bare ground and within a few weeks the terminal bud opens to produce as many as 10 trumpet flowers on each stem.   The leaves appear in early spring and die off by mid summer.  This has been their best year ever.

Once the flowers appeared, (I always forget where they are), I replanted this south facing bank adding a selection of drought tolerant plants.

Hedychium deceptum Rubrum

I bought this when we all visited Chichester Gingers last year.  It stayed in the greenhouse through the winter and then went outside in spring.
Buds appeared in mid August and in September when the nights got cooler I put it back inside where the flowers soon opened.  It is amazing but, unlike some Gingers, has no perfume.

Best wishes

Linda

Thanks Linda, that gorgeous orange Ginger. I persuaded Mum to keep my Ginger in her tiny greenhouse last winter and then it’s been in thegarden all Summer. Like you I have brought it in now and it’s in the conservatory and so much enjoying it. Love the Amaryllis too. S x
